Fear 10 – Handout flyers on street
What's the challenge?
To hand out flyers on the street.
What are you afraid of?
To overcome the fear of rejection and looking ridiculous.
How was the experience?
Let's face it: Nowadays we are so naturally into ignoring and rejecting people who hand out flyers on the street. We nod and shake our head, we smile and we show the powerful hand sign to represent 'no , thanks'. So, in the hope of feeling rejected time after time, I decided to do exactly what I hate to encounter and try to avoid the most.
I designed some flyers telling the story about my 10 day project and I tried to hand them out to people for at least 20 minutes around Bishan and Toa Payoh where usually it's crowded at a weekend afternoon.
Honestly, I thought it will not be that hard. As I had similar experience where I've worked as an event staff and it required me to approach strangers to give out free ice cream in exchange for their sign up of an app. But that was required as part of work. This round, it is coming from me, my own initiative. That's the difference.
I felt completely ridiculous at first and then I was even making fun of the fact that I was bothering so many people on their way to lunch whatsoever. I even sweat big time during the entire giving out flyers time. No jokes, my palm was sweaty and I look as if I just came out from a shower.
I did not manage to hand out all flyers on my hand but ya a few actually took it and they read it on the spot while walking away. Watch the video for the stats heh heh heh.
Although I did not get asked to Wendy's like Michelle, I learned to be slightly thick skin to embrace the fear of rejection like this. :)
