Fear 07 – Fencing for the first time!

What's the challenge?

To overcome the fear of sharp object 'pointing' at me especially it's like incoming...

What are you afraid of?

I’m afraid of the moment or that feeling of knowing something 'sharp' is coming straight to me a.k.a kena jab. I know there're protective gears on us but it's the feeling of knowing 'dangerous' item coming straight to us. Well, it's also a dangerous item if we remove the protective pads.

How was the experience?

Booked the class at SportivA (located nearby Taiseng MRT) and the entire process was pretty seamless. My bad for not reading the map beforehand and was late for about 10mins. Tips: Be there earlier so that you can maximize the entire time there!

Melvin was the coach and he walk through us the type of weapons used and some basic history of it. Long story short, we started with fundamental which I think they're more to learn too actually. We learnt how to standby, on guard pose, moving forward, backward and the most essential of all – lunges hahaha. Not the usual soft lunges, be quick and firm and on point (not so easy eh)!

The next session was sparring where I get to wear the protective chest mount, a thick jacket, glove and the headgear. Melvin also taught us the rules, how to connect the hanging wires (if you notice there's a wire attached to our back) and the scores etc. Basically, in short, it means I got to jab the coach. Hahahahahaha. Well in fact, if you watch the video till the end, you get to see the score!

Kudos to Melvin coach. He is truly a funny and full of humour guy which made the entire session so enjoyable and more importantly – fun! :D Even though I got jabbed by his powerful sparring skill, that was still fine as what doesn't kill you make you stronger. Every bruise makes me stronger too. Kidding. I only got 2 or 3 bruises la haha.
